Tether has aggressively expanded its holdings of US Treasury bonds, acquiring $65 billion worth in the first quarter of 2025. The stablecoin issuer now holds $98.5 billion in direct Treasury exposure, with an additional $21.3 billion in indirect holdings. These instruments now constitute over 80% of Tether’s $149.2 billion in total assets.

The company positions its USDT stablecoin as "the leading digital representation" of the US dollar, suggesting growing influence in global dollar flows. This treasury accumulation represents a near-tripling of its $33 billion position reported just three months prior in Q4 2024.

Such concentrated dollar-denominated holdings underscore Tether’s strategic alignment with traditional finance systems, even as it operates within cryptocurrency markets. The scale of these acquisitions may prompt questions about the stablecoin issuer’s growing role in sovereign debt markets.
